What a balloon ride costs

Across the 31 US places we cover, a seat on a shared flight typically starts at about $299 per person. The cheapest places to start are Temecula ($179), Phoenix and Scottsdale ($179) and Albuquerque ($189). The highest starting prices are in Columbus ($425) and Vermont ($395). Outside the US, prices are in each operator's own currency.

Almost every flight leaves around sunrise, because the air is calmest then, and the whole outing takes about 3 to 4 hours for 45 to 60 minutes in the air. Weight matters more than people expect: most operators ask for each passenger's weight when you book, and some charge extra or require a second seat above 250 to 300 lb.

Common questions

Why do balloon rides start so early?

Winds are lightest and most stable just after sunrise, and in the US balloons may not launch before official sunrise. In hot places like Phoenix, afternoon flights only run in the cooler months (about November to March).

What happens if my flight is cancelled for weather?

Operators that publish a policy refund or rebook weather cancellations, and several suggest booking early in your trip so there's time to fly the next morning. Cancelling yourself is different: notice periods range from 24 hours to 7 days depending on the company. Each listing shows the operator's own terms.

Is there a weight limit for hot air balloon rides?

It varies. Red Rock Balloons in Sedona asks guests over 280 lb to call before booking. Aerogelic adds a surcharge over 250 lb and requires a second ticket over 300 lb; Rainbow Ryders has no limit but charges an extra seat over 300 lb. California Dreamin' in Temecula lists 300 lb per person.

Can children ride in a hot air balloon?

Usually from about age 5 or 6, with a height minimum. Napa's Yountville operators require 6 and 48 inches; Hot Air Expeditions in Phoenix requires 5 and 48 inches; Grape Escape in Temecula has no age minimum but requires 4 feet. Aerogelic, for example, doesn't take babies or toddlers.
